- The population within CRTPO’s region is approximately 1.12 million as of the 2010 census, making its population the largest of any MPO in the state.
- CRTPO’s population density is 1,206 persons/square mile, as of the 2010 Census.
- The total area contained within CRTPO’s planning region is 1,559.4 square miles.
- CRTPO is part of the Charlotte urbanized area (UZA). The UZA is 741 square miles and has a population of 1,249,442 (2010 Census)
- CRTPO currently consists of 24 jurisdictions within Iredell, Mecklenburg and Union counties, with 27 voting members.

- The Charlotte Planning, Design & Development Department is the lead planning agency for CRTPO.
- CRTPO is one of the four MPOs and one RPO that make up the Charlotte Regional Alliance for Transportation (CRAFT).
- CRTPO is considered a Transportation Management Area (TMA) because its population exceeds 200,000.
- The entirety of CRTPO is within Division 10 and Division 12 of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
- The City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the State of Highway Commission adopted the first formal Memorandum of Understanding in 1965, which defined a transportation planning process for Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
- Union County became a part of the Charlotte area MPO after the 1990 census due to an expansion of the Charlotte Urbanized Area into parts of Union County; Iredell County became a part of the Charlotte area after the 2010 census due to parts of the Charlotte Urbanized Area expanding into parts of Iredell County. (Hence the transition from the Mecklenburg-Union MPO to the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization.)
