The Work Group
The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Work Group was officially formed in August of 2014. The establishment of this TCC advisory committee grew from a need to ensure consistency and continuity in on-going bicycle and pedestrian planning efforts. The Work Group also works to ensure that bicycle and pedestrian users, planners, and advocates throughout the MPO region have a voice in the planning process.
Safe bicyclist and pedestrian travel is a priority throughout the Charlotte Metropolitan and surrounding areas, and is one component of an effective multi-modal transportation network. CRTPO’s 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan clearly identifies existing and planned resources and planning efforts aimed at expanding opportunities for safe bicycle and pedestrian travel throughout the MPO area.
The Work Group’s core mission and goals are listed below. Specific tasks undertaken by the Work Group are anticipated to evolve over time.

Mission:
The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) Bicycle & Pedestrian Work Group is tasked with an advisory role in the MPO planning process. The Work Group draws on the technical expertise of practitioners and advocates in the bicycle and pedestrian planning arena. This expertise is essential in recommending the efficient allocation of funding for studies, projects, and planning efforts. The Bicycle & Pedestrian Work Group makes recommendations directly to the MPO’s Technical Coordinating Committee, and advises the committee on specific matters when so directed.
Goals:
- Advocate for safer bicyclist and pedestrian means of transportation;
- Support advocacy and education efforts throughout the MPO planning area;
- Work collaboratively with regional bicyclist and pedestrian planning initiatives and agencies;
- Ensure that bicyclist and pedestrian transportation issues are fully integrated into the MPO’s planning process, planning documents, and policy efforts; and
- Seek resources, as determined by the MPO, which provide for bicyclist and pedestrian transportation choices.
Membership:
The Bicycle & Pedestrian Work Group is comprised of TCC members, NCDOT Division representatives, and local staff from across the planning area.
