Safe Streets and Roads for All

The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) has been awarded $3.15 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Discretionary Grant program. The CRTPO is one of eleven recipients in North Carolina and one of 284 projects awarded across the country.
“This Safe Streets & Roads for All grant award is an exciting investment in the CRTPO planning area and acknowledgment by USDOT of our important role in this work,” said CRTPO Director Robert Cook. “The development of a multi-jurisdictional safety action plan will provide the region’s leaders with a review of the current transportation safety conditions, data-driven recommendations, and long-term action plans for addressing gaps and challenges.”
Safety is Everyone’s Business: A Comprehensive Safety Action Plan
The CRTPO’s grant application, titled Safety is Everyone’s Business, will create a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to set the groundwork for achieving a reduction of serious traffic injuries and fatalities on the region’s roadways. As the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Charlotte Urban Area, the CRTPO will leverage its partnerships across Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union counties to unify local priorities and knowledge into a single planning process.
Understanding the impact of physical infrastructure on all users, the CRTPO will create a regional High Injury Network to identify priority corridors and intersections needing traffic safety enhancements. Using this data tool, the CRTPO will work with its regional partners to program roadway design improvements, enhanced traffic enforcement, and pilot projects to test new transportation technologies and designs.
Finally, the CRTPO will embed the findings and recommendations of the study into its ongoing work to program and fund transportation projects in the planning area, ensuring the transportation system is designed to meet population growth and the prevalence of multimodal travel.
About SS4A Grants
The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Discretionary Grant program funds projects to plan, demonstrate, and implement transportation safety improvements to prevent deaths and serious injuries on American roadways. SS4A requires an eligible Comprehensive Safety Action Plan be in place before a community can apply for capital funding to implement projects. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created this multibillion-dollar grant program and adopted the National Roadway Safety Strategy to take a holistic view of how user behavior, infrastructure condition and design, and incident response influence safe transportation outcomes.
